8th Ave NE Bikeway Walk and Talk

Support Bikeways on 8th Ave NE

St. Anthony West is having their annual meeting on Thursday, July 9th, 6:30p at Dickman Park. There will be an opportunity for people to talk to City staff about this project. Because of proposed parking changes, we anticipate a large turnout.  It is imperative that we show our support for this very important protected bikeway.  Invite your neighbors!

Walk and Talk!

In preparation for the annual meeting, the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition is hosting an optional Walk and Talk around the City's Plymouth Ave N/8th Ave NE bikeway project. The walk and talk will focus on 8th Ave NE, but we will give updates about Plymouth Ave N.

Meet at Dickman Park at 5:30p on Wednesday, July 8th. We will walk a portion of 8th Ave NE and talk about some challenges on the route.  RSVP here.

Project information

Minneapolis Public Works is planning to install a protected bikeway* lane and bike boulevard on Plymouth Ave N/8th Ave NE between Lyndale Ave N and 5th St NE this year.

A protected bikeway currently exists on the Plymouth Ave N bridge, this project would extend the bikeways into North and Northeast. Since a protected bike lane was installed on Plymouth Bridge in 2013, daily bicycle traffic has increased 67 percent.

In order to install the protected bike lane, parking changes are proposed: On-street parking must be removed from 8th Ave NE on the north side of street from Sibley St NE to University Ave NE, and on the south side of street from Marshall St NE to University Ave NE. No parking changes are proposed west of Sibley St NE or east of University Ave NE.

*What is a protected bikeway?

Not everyone feels comfortable and safe riding on a busy street, even with a regular bike lane. A protected bikeway creates a more comfortable space to ride that is physically separated from motor vehicle traffic. A separated facility can attract a wider demographic of riders and the City sees protected bikeways as an important tool to increase bicycling in Minneapolis.
